5 Ways To Ease Into Fall

by Jeani Hunt, MS, RD, CD, VitaminLife's resident dietitian and owner of VeggieLush Nutrition.
Fall is officially here, and it can be a shock to the system. Days are shorter, the wind is cooler and school and work activities seem to ramp up leading up to the holidays. Here are some ways to ease into Fall and avoid overwhelm.
- Keep moving your body - Sometimes as fall sets, things get busy and and it's no longer as exciting to get outdoors, so physical activity drops off. Instead, find a new exercise routine that works with your schedule, whether that's strength training to videos after the kids go to bed or running on a nearby path before work. Don't forget to layer up for comfort and flexibility and stay hydrated.
- Lean into fall spices - Fall spices are amazing for you! Cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar. Cloves also help with blood sugar and are antimicrobial. Nutmeg is anti-inflammatory and so is ginger. Mix them up into your own pumpkin spice blend or enjoy them in oatmeal, on yogurt, in smoothies or in your next latte.
- Consider adding Vitamin D - Especially if you live somewhere in the Northern part of the U.S., this time of year signals the end of sunny days that make it easy to get a little sun exposure. However, vitamin D is essential for immunity, bone health and even hormone health. Make sure you're getting enough with fortified foods and supplements.
- Make sure you're getting enough healthy fats - Healthy fats help keep us full and satisfied, fight inflammation and even help our brains function properly. To ensure you're keeping up this fall, make sure you're getting unsaturated fat from foods like olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado as well as omega-3 fats from oily fish, walnuts, chia and supplements.
- Double down on hygiene - In addition to getting all the essential nutrients to help your immune system function well, you'll want to double down on hygiene this fall with lots of hand washing, hand sanitizer (when washing isn't possible) and avoiding sharing food and drinks with potentially sick folks. This is doubly true if you have kids in school. You may not be able to fully avoid those fall colds and flus, but now is a great time to start preventing them.
