1. Stay Active - It's tempting to just hibernate all winter long with the gray skies and cold air, but your body will thank you if you get up and get out! Try some winter sports or just bundle up and get the right gear to get out and run, bike or hike this weather. If you really want to avoid the cold, you can always choose an indoor activity like dance, martial arts or yoga.
2. Lean into seasonal soups and stews - While we don't have the bounty of summer produce this time of year, we can still get in those veggies, antioxidants and fiber! Soups made with leafy greens, squash and mushrooms plus beans and anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric, ginger, cardamom, cloves and more are a great way to stay healthy this winter.
3. Don't forget to hydrate - While we place a lot of emphasis on hydrating during the summer, it can be just as important in the winter time. All the dry air and heaters can cause us to lose hydration, so it's important to replenish with electrolyte drinks, herbal tea, broths and plain old water.
4. Get that Vitamin D - Now is a great time to stock up on a good dose of vitamin D and possibly a UV light. Vitamin D is important for bone health, hormone health and your immune system, and you're unlikely to get enough from sunshine this time of year.
5. Enjoy seasonal spices - Cinnamon, cloves, allspice and nutmeg just to name a few are all anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. Plus, cinnamon helps keep blood sugar even. It's a great time to snuggle up with a spicy hot cocoa and drink in those antioxidants.
