May is Women's Health Month, and it's not too late to celebrate! No matter where you are in your health journey, we have supplements to help you make the most of it.
1. Get your Omega-3s - The more we study it, the more we realize omega-3 fats are super important for women's health. They help with hormone health, fertility, brain health and inflammation. Get them by eating fatty fish, flax, walnuts and taking supplements.
2. Make sure you're getting enough Vitamin D - Guess what? We have vitamin D receptors in our female reproductive organs and folks who are replete with vitamin D are more fertile! So make sure to get out in the sunshine and find a good supplement.
3. Up your whole grain intake - It seems like carbs have been given a bad name in recent years, but if you look at the research whole grains are full of B vitamins, fiber, vitamin E and other nutrients that are important for women's health. Get them from whole wheat, brown rice, quinoa, oats and more.
4. Get some protein from soy - Not only could most women use a little more protein, particularly during pregnancy, postpartum recovery and menopause, but soy is particularly helpful for hormonal imbalances. It can be either pro or anti-estrogenic depending on the amount of estrogen in your body. It quite literally helps "balance hormones." This can be very helpful for menopause, when we're lower on estrogen or for conditions like PCOS, where you have high testosterone and low estrogen.
5. Start strength training now - As women, we're sometimes taught that we shouldn't "bulk up" or build big muscles, but the truth is that muscles help us be stronger and have better quality of life as we age. Don't let anyone tell you you can't be a muscular woman!
Bonus: Build a healthy gut with prebiotics & probiotics - women are more susceptible to gut issues and imbalances. Eating prebiotic foods like fiber and probiotic foods like kimchi and kombucha or getting probiotics from supplements can help you keep a healthy and happy gut.
