“Cacao beans are seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree, a small evergreen tree grown in Mexico and South America. Cacao beans are roasted and ground to produce cocoa and, after further processing, are the basis of chocolate. When the beans are dried at low temperature, however, they are called raw cacao beans, which can be consumed whole, broken into pieces called nibs or ground to produce raw cocoa powder. Cacao beans are rich in natural antioxidant compounds with many health benefits.

Cacao Antioxidants
Cacao beans contain natural chemicals called flavonoids, a type of antioxidant compound that promotes general health and might lower your risk of several diseases. One type of flavonoid, called anthocyanidin, is especially high in cacao beans, along with other compounds called epicatechins. These compounds are powerful antioxidants and, according to a study in the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” published in 2003, are especially concentrated in cocoa, a product of cacao beans. In that study, researchers compared the antioxidant capacity of black tea, green tea, red wine and cocoa, concluding that cocoa has the highest antioxidant activity among the four products and the greatest potential for health benefits.

She indicates that proanthocyanidin compounds in cocoa powder can help decrease oxidation of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL. Often called bad cholesterol, LDL is oxidized and then deposited in plaque. Plaque produces fat accumulations in arteries that can lead to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Because cacao antioxidants block LDL oxidation, they can prevent plaque formation, improving circulation and lowering your risk of heart disease.

The Linus Pauling Institute indicates that flavonoid antioxidants such as those found in cacao might interfere with the development of cancer. In one laboratory study published in 2002 in “Cancer Letters,” anthocyanidins from cacao reduced the incidence of chemically induced pancreatic and breast cancer in laboratory animals. In a review of evidence from human subjects, published in 2009 in “Nutrition and Cancer,” researchers concluded that compounds in cacao might prevent cancer or improve the outcome when the disease is already present. However, they state that more extensive studies with larger populations are needed to confirm this.”

“Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) are the most nutritionally dense fruit on Earth. How do I take Oscillo?

Dissolve the entire contents of one tube under the tongue every 6 hours, up to 3 times a day. The Surprising Therapeutic Benefits of Xylitol

“Xylitol is a 5-carbon sugar that has 40% fewer calories and 75% fewer carbs than refined white sugar. Benefits of Colloidal Silver

“Colloidal silver is a health supplement that is created by immersing tiny particles of silver in a colloidal base solution. Four Ways Rhodiola Could Change Your Life

“These plants tend to grow in the most inhospitable areas of the earth: high deserts, cold mountains, dry and barren land. And in order to survive there, they develop particular compounds in their physical form which convey a resistance to the environmental stressors. Rhodiola has a calming effect on our body and mental state because of an ability to reduce cortisol, one of our major stress hormones. While some cortisol is absolutely necessary to live — this is the hormone that is released from your adrenal glands in a cyclic manner during the day or during times of stress — most of us exist in a state of nearly constant exposure to this compound, resulting in lowered blood sugar response, abdominal weight gain, decreased memory, reduced cellular energy production, and diminished immunity. Through reducing cortisol and balancing the endocrine system (your hypothalamus, who talks to the rest of the body to let it know when to release what, your pituitary, who is the translator for the hypothalamus, and your adrenals, specifically), rhodiola helps to not only reduce this constant release of cortisol, but also to balance and heal the whole communication network more long term. This results in, predictably, improved memory and focus, better energy levels, increased resistance to sickness, and significantly better insulin response. Rhodiola as an alternative to ADHD pharmaceutical drugs makes complete sense, as they’re both working on the same neurological pathways. And thankfully, unlike prescription medication, Rhodiola won’t blow out your kidneys and liver, stagnate your growth, or give your heart palpitations.

If you’re going to give this lovely herb a try, just make sure to get a supplement that is guaranteed Siberian-grown. Because the plants need exposure to stress in order to develop these compounds (called Rosavins, if you’re interested), the ones that are grown in more temperate or hospitable places won’t have any effect on our bodies. I’m particularly fond of the New Chapter brand, and tend to recommend people to take the 300 mg capsule once a day in the morning to start.

There’s no potential for addiction or dependency, and eventually, hopefully, you won’t need to take the Rhodiola because it will have, not only balanced your physical state, but given you the opportunity to work on your mental and emotional responses to the world around you, creating new, healthy, neurological pathways. As I mentioned before, if you’ve got any kind of mania going on or are on an MAOI, don’t take this. People with high blood pressure don’t benefit from it either.

Natural Sugar Alternatives

“As the harmful effects of sugar and high fructose corn syrup become increasingly more evident, people are turning to natural alternatives.

A sweetener that has become very popular in the past few years is coconut sugar.

This sugar is derived from the coconut palm tree and is touted as being more nutritious and lower on the glycemic index than sugar.

There is a lot of talk about this sweetener online and I’d like to separate the facts from the fiction.

What is Coconut Sugar and How is it Made?
Coconut sugar is also called Coconut Palm Sugar.

It is a natural sugar made from sap, which is the sugary circulating fluid of the coconut plant. It is often confused with Palm Sugar, which is similar but made from a different type of palm tree.

Coconut sugar is made in a natural 2-step process:

A cut is made on the flower of the coconut palm and the liquid sap is collected into containers.
The sap is placed under heat until most of the water has evaporated.
s it More Nutritious Than Regular Sugar?
Regular table sugar and high fructose corn syrup don’t contain any vital nutrients and therefore supply “empty” calories.

However, coconut sugar does retain quite a bit of the nutrients found in the coconut palm. There isn’t a lot of data on this, but according to the Phillipine Department of Agriculture, coconut sugar contains several nutrients (1):

Most notable of these are the minerals Iron, Zinc, Calcium and Potassium, along with some short chain fatty acids, polyphenols and antioxidants that may also provide some health benefits.

Then it contains a fiber called Inulin, which may slow glucose absorption and explain why coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index than regular table sugar (2).
